OHB mandates SCISYS to deliver the ground segment for German Heinrich Hertz satellite mission
Bochum, 23. October 2017. SCISYS Deutschland GmbH located in Bochum, Germany has been awarded a contract by OHB System AG (Bremen, Germany) for the realisation of the ground segment of the German national satellite communications mission "Heinrich Hertz“. OHB awarded a contract by the the German Aerospace Center (DLR) for the implementation of phase C/D plus launch of the mission. As the ground segment prime contractor, SCISYS will design and implement the complete ground segment of the “Heinrich Hertz” mission including the preparation of the mission operations concept.
With “Heinrich Hertz”, SCISYS launches a new chapter in the history of the company. Already for decades, the SCISYS Space division delivers reliable cutting edge-technology and highly qualified experts for numerous national and international space programmes and missions. As prime contractor for the “Heinrich Hertz” Ground segment, SCISYS now takes responsibility for the complete satellite ground segment, ranging from the technology to the implementation of the operations concept. “With our experience, our proven technology and not least the know-how of our motivated and qualified employees we are in an excellent position to make the step from a subsystem supplier to the ground segment prime contractor for large space missions,” says Ulli Leibnitz, Director of Space in Germany. “Over the years, we have gained an excellent reputation as a reliable partner in the ground segment. Within the “Heinrich Hertz” control centre, SCISYS will implement a state-of-the-art operational concept. The increased use of automated functions will significantly reduce the number of required manual operating steps. Through a smart combination of reliable automation technology, consolidation of central functions in the ground segment and the early build-up and preservation of know-how for operations personnel, the “Heinrich Hertz” mission operations will be designed to be robust and cost-efficient in the same way. Main requirements for the operations of a satellite mission like reliability, availability and security will be implemented without limitation. The “Heinrich Hertz” ground segment will be based on PLENITER®, the SCISYS software suite for the planning and implementation and operation of complete satellite missions. Within the ground segment, also other companies like OHB will be involved. As the overall industrial prime contractor, OHB takes responsibility for the realisation of the entire mission, including satellite, launch and ground infrastructure. The launch of Heinrich Hertz is planned for 2021.
The German national satellite communications mission “Heinrich Hertz” is aimed at conducting scientific and technical studies and tests of new communication technologies in space. In addition, the satellite will carry an independent telecommunication payload (MilSatcom) that will be used by the German Federal Ministry of Defence. The "Heinrich Hertz" satellite mission is supported by the DLR Space Administration, with funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), and conducted in collaboration with the German Federal Ministry of Defence (BMVg).
